It's a good free alternative to MH. And it certainly has its moments. The story is iffy and I found myself skipping the dialogues more often than not, which is bad for someone like me who prefers a strong story. But the gameplay more than makes up for this.
Me and a small group of friends started playing dauntless a few months ago when it went into open beta. I was skeptical at first because of epic games' bad track record in killing games like Paragon. But after getting a hold of the game after 2 hours I was hooked. You don't need good story for this type of game to be good. Just good gameplay and progression.
After a week of playing me and my friends found ourselves fighting a relatively significant monster, at the time that was. Rockfall Scarn is the successor to the less than intimidating Scarn, who is a breeze to early Slayers. Rockfall Scarn, was the complete opposite. His health values were through the roof, and his new abilities to shield himself while dealing out damage made this an even bigger threat. My friends has always targeted me for choosing repeaters as my preferred weapon type (the only dedicated ranged weapon in the game). This weapon would prove to crucial in a matter of minutes.
Scarn has an ability that pulls players to him and deals almost all of their health with one hit, and it deals out two. So if you arent away from him by the time the second hit arrives, you're down and in a bad spot. Eventually my friends got hit by that too many times and we were at 100% Danger (this is the games way of telling you that you've been doing this too long and you need to finish up, removing resistances and disabling revives, but not self revives).
I was the last one standing, and after 30 minutes I was getting mentally worn out. But when 100% Danger hits, the music changes, slow drums build up until a horn blares in a Godzilla esque fashion. Then the environment shifts, causing thunderstorms in some areas and sandstorms in others. Rockfall Scarn causes a sandstorm, so here I am facing down this behemoth, alone, in a sandstorm. I'm beaten, out of potions, and after 30 minutes I'm not leaving without finishing this guy...
