It has potential, but quickly becomes side tracked and lost by delving into politics and fake news and other distracted topics, that makes it less about how bad our phones are and more about centrist politics. There’s a lot of exaggeration, manipulation of statistics and panicked dialogue surrounding the debate that makes it really vague and doesn’t really say anything. I especially didn’t appreciate manipulating suicide statistics to blame it on social media. They try to use technology as a scapegoat when really it’s just a symptom of bad human nature.
We’ve been told a million times that technology is bad, and this documentary isn’t really bringing anything new or revolutionary to the table. They set it up to sound like they’re revealing industry secrets but it’s honestly nothing new.
This documentary does get some things right, but it only scratches the surface and focuses on the wrong things. The bad acting and script doesn’t help, and when you concentrate, you realize how obvious it is that they’re trying to manipulate you. It’s pure shock value.
