Although this book is specifically for children, ranging from 7 and up, it provides through a tale of weird western fantasy tale an examination of what we have historically done and continue to do to our environment and native people. The Baron Von Nickle, a railroad tycoon and lead protagonist, acts as a dictator over the land with many similarities to those currently in power around the world. Greed and selfish interests outweigh the good of the whole, but through traditions, and a coming-back to earth approach I believe this book should inspire adults as well. Me’ma and the Great Mountain was published in 2011 with The Goodbye Family and the Great Mountain coming out in 2020. This story has less dark humor that its successor, and is easier to read. Corine Fairbanks gives a powerful foreword of historical context to Richards’ story. I am hoping this review is helpful.
