Not that bad. It’s okay. It didn’t leave as big of an impression as the first movie, but that’s a tall order for reasons you already know.
I will say that Frozen 2 was very beautiful to watch. As far as the story, the songs and the characters go, I’d give them an ehhh, but the visuals are absolutely stunning and the movie is worth a watch just for that. I love the colours, the fluidity and vibrancy and if I could give the whole movie 5 stars just for that, I absolutely would.
I honestly don’t know why they made Anna’s whole character restricted to “I love Elsa” and “Pedantic girlfriend.” She was annoying at best and unlikeable at worst and that’s not something I want to say for a character who was so full of life in the first movie. There were a couple of parts where Kristoff was trying to have a moment and Anna basically behaved like a 13 year old wanting to pick a fight but didn’t want to be the one to start it.
Olaf would be funny if his whole humour wasn’t restricted to “LOL so random! XD.” Imagine every comic relief side-kick character in most modern, high-budgeted, animated movies rolled into one and that’s Olaf in Frozen 2. In the first movie, he was at least a little bit charming, but it’s obvious in this movie that they were just trying way too hard to make him relevant and “hip with the kids.”
The songs are fine, but they’re nothing special and mostly sounded the same. Kristoff’s song was the most original and was kind of funny but mostly just takes you out of the experience. Not that I was really in it to begin with. Show Yourself, I’d say, was their attempt to remake Let it Go because it was Elsa’s “freedom” song, but it just didn’t pack the same punch.
The story was pretty half-baked in all honesty. It’s missing its ability to grip onto the audience and take them on a journey with the characters. Instead, they’re just pulling you along with half of the movie just recapping the first. Mix that with some not-so-subtle foreshadowing, plot convenience and a just as half-baked sub plot and you have Frozen 2.
