I see all these reviews about this book being depressing and I am at a complete loss as to what you thought you were going to be reading as it takes place during THE GREAT DEPRESSION. There were so many beautiful moments of friendship and love during a unbearable times. It is about struggle- internal and external. About fighting injustice and finding yourself. She gives us these characters to relate to, to feel empathy and root for so that maybe we can find it in ourselves to give that same care to people struggling today.
I can understand if one has certain views about immigrants how they would not enjoy to see themselves reflected in the villains of this story but perhaps it is they that needs to read it most of all.
I think this is an important read. Loved it.
