While “Boys in the Valley” begins promisingly with haunting images of demonic, ritual sacrifice in the early 1900s including the murder of a three year old child at the hands of backwoods Satanists (?), it soon deteriorates into Oliver Twist images of abused orphans at the hands of priests. The ending is preposterous and feels that it was commissioned by the Catholic Church to combat recent criticisms. I suppose if you are of the Catholic faith and believe that simple “Christ compels you!” type endings can erase all previous horrors, abuse, and psychic trauma, then this book is for you. However, for fans of well written horror such as King, this simplistic tale will leave you disappointed.
