Possibly a bit generous with my rating, given my extremely low expectations and a bit of residual PTSD from Yorgos Lanthimos and Emma Stone’s last collaboration, Poor Things. While Bugonia was fairly predictable, the film carried me through with its performances. It’s hard to go wrong with Emma Stone and Jesse Plemons, and I was pleasantly surprised by Aidan Delbis’ performance.
Fortunately, I caught on to the film’s campy intent early, so the over the top ending didn’t disappoint me as much as some other viewers noted. There were quite a few lol moments, which I didn’t expect, and I always appreciate a good “gotcha” scene, even when it’s played for comic relief.
All in all, I’d recommend catching Bugonia on the big screen. I doubt I would’ve enjoyed it as much streaming at home.
