A remarkable and innovative depiction of the Holocaust as experienced obliquely via sound and suggestion rather than direct depiction. Based on a novel by the late Martin Amies, the director used extensive research of the Auschwitz archives to create great authenticity around the central character, the camp commandant and his 'surreally normal' family life there. The unforgettably ominous atmosphere thus created pervades the entire film, quietly hitting home like a zen sledgehammer.
