TCM played this iconic queer film the other night at 1:15 AM in the morning, and for two hours I was riveted to the screen - I did not fall asleep nor did I go to the bathroom for fear of missing any key element of this phenomenal movie.
The acting in this film from the leads all the way down to the supporting players are true pros, and the production values recreating 1959 are true to the era.
I remember when this film came out in 1985, but, unfortunately it took me forty years to see it. It accurately shows all the restrictions on women (both straight and gay) at the time, and the film is completely realistic in its portayal of love and complicated family relationships.
I have already recommended this film to all my friends, and I am going to recommend it to my queer daughter, who usually avoids gay films.
