Do the actors look like they were ripped from the pages of the comics? No. And yeah, I hate it! Did they go dark and gritty just for the sake of keeping with the current DC tone? Again, yes. BUT... the actors have shown in just a couple of episodes that they can convey their respective character’s emotional conflict, which any fan knows is central to Titans characters (haven’t seen much from Beast Boy, yet). And I’m loving how they’ve chosen to showcase their abilities. As for tone, it feels like a real, fully realized world that I can believe in. It doesn’t feel forced, and it never shows Robin actually kill anyone. Brutally name and disfigure—yes, and it can be argued that the villains he tore up couldn’t survive their beatings, but a boy turns into a tiger... it’s a superhero show. Villains are tough. And before you get upset at the tone, remember: if we ever see the arrival of Brother Blood, the tone better be able to handle it.
It’s not perfect, but it deserves its current 81% on Rotten Tomatoes, and I’m EXCITED TO SEE WHERE IT GOES! Do yourself a favor—get the 7-day free trial to DC Universe, and watch it.
