How did I miss this movie when it arrived in the theatres?
It is one of the best I’ve ever seen - even though I watched it on the “small screen” in my living room.
This quirky film perfectly captures the era now known as “mid-century.” The post-war baby boom is very evident here, as is the pre-“women’s liberation” mindset.
But, in spite of a lack of money, a ton of kiddos, and an often-drunk & sometimes abusive hubby, this prize-winning mom knows something that some of us never learn: Money is absolutely necessary, but the lack of it should never define us - or, take away our happiness.
While I should stop here, there’s so much more to enjoy about this movie - the depiction of this historical era, the carefully nuanced characters, (who, BTW, are based upon real people, a real family,) and the sheer joy that this mom takes in solving both money problems, and the day-to-day issues of daily life with clarity and kindness. Here, five stars seems like an understatement...so I’ll give it a ... Bravo!
