SG the challenge was super difficult to watch. I thought I signed up to watch a game show instead, I got a drama that focused on individual players delusional about their chances of winning the cash prize. Like, you’re probably not going to win, have a little fun.
The creators decided to add long, drawn out mini eliminations that were unbearably slow and left the fate of each player in the hands of others. Hell no. The original series is compelling to watch because though there were moments where the contestants drew the short end of the stick, it was fair. There weren’t votes to eliminate other players and other players didn’t get to assign the order for the glass bridge challenge. If I were a contestant, I would have been livid. Competition shows are only successful when there is consistency and fairness among challenges.
With all that said, what killed the show the most were the drawn out interviews with contestants and the drawn out game sequences that focused on personalities getting eliminated when the audience ultimately doesn’t care who wins. We choose to watch game shows for entertainment and for the fast pace. Not to fall in love with the winner. There are too many contestants for that.
The reason Mr Beasts version became so successful was because of the pace. We want to see the challenges, not the personalities. But where Mr beasts version bested this series is that he featured relationships of the contestants secondarily but did it with great care to where it didn’t overshadow the main premise.
Lastly, each episode should have gone though every challenge with a winner at the end of each episode. Make ten episodes with each winner getting 456k instead of one winner getting 4.56m. It would retain the audience.
