Many reviews are mentioning how stupid Liv was in this survival situation (i.e. she didn't rinse the bottle before filling it with water, she tried to grab a metal bowl right off of a fire, etc.) and while she did make many stupid mistakes, she did not grow up in the woods. Her father even mentions how the few times they went out into the woods Liv and he would simply complain and didn't really want to be there, and they were just going on measly hikes. So I do not know why so many reviewers were expecting this to be some incredible survival story about how Liv managed to use her incredible survival skills to get through this terrible situation. It was a story about how somehow, this girl who has barely ever seen the woods, somehow made it through this situation. And honestly, in my opinion, that is not even the main plot of the show. So many people are complaining about the massive amounts of flashbacks in this show, but I think that's the point. They are explaining how Liv got to where she is, why she is the way she is, and showing her motivation to keep going even when it seems like dying is the best way to solve her problems at that moment. They are showing that the reason she pushes her coworker away is that she's scared that they will leave just like her mother, and they are showing that the reason she won't give up is that she does not want to be like her mother, so she keeps pushing.
I think the people who are giving this show bad reviews were expecting some sort of incredibly crusty, forest-y, survival story. But that is not what this show is. It is about the things we inherit from our parents, it is about how those things affect us, it is about battling with our past and trying to find some way to see a future even when your thoughts are completely crowded with all of the baggage you can't seem to leave behind.
