While I understand that M3gan couldn't stay a villain forever, it still felt a little disappointing to know we were veering away from the thriller of the first one. But that's not to say the second movie didn't bring out a well-paced change. M3gan went from being a homicidal robot to being a layered being capable of evolution and growth, to the point where she's no longer just a bunch of 0s and 1s- she's grown and understands more than just kill and terrorize. Again, would have wanted more horror, but I understand why they veered, and I'm actually ok with it. It's good for a comfy watch, in my opinion.

Better than species 3, that's for sure. Still, that's not saying much- the storyline could have been better. Miranda's convenient, rickety health problems make sure that a good deal of the movie is less 'species' and more 'frankenstein's' moral dilemmas. The enemies in the movie didn't have to be enemies, they felt forced into their antagonism. The ending totally invalidated the whole movie, for me.

While the concept of Sara was fascinating- she was the perfect, conceived entity the humans had been trying to prevent since the first movie- the entire movie just doesn't seem to care about her. As powerful as she is, she's literally sitting on a bench for a good deal of the movie, and when she's not doing that? She's rejecting potential mates because she's too snobby. Species 3 has more holes in it than swiss cheese, and it did not do a good job of continuing Species and Species 2's legacy (however tenuous those were). In the end, Species 3 doesn't have any concrete storyline to ride on, and Sara's seesawing between good and evil felt forced and inorganic.
