Well, from Casino Royale to this. Hard hitting, cool Bond to touch feely, dad Bond.
The beauty of Craig was he changed Bond into a more up front in your face Matt Dam, Jason Bourne fighter. A shift that worked well, with great stunts with the usual backdrop of beautiful scenery, women included! This movie seems to move away from this successful, intoxicating formula to a more mellow, inward thinking Bond. This is great if you want to see a more normal, vulnerable middle aged man come to terms with his past. Personally, I much prefer the escapism provided by the suave, self assured, can do and will do Bond. Hence this movie, with the backdrop of Vespa, 15 years previous, struggles to live up to previous successes. Unfortunately, it appears that there actually was no struggle in trying to attempt to get back to the Bond we have come to expect of late. Some will see this as a positive, citing the need for change and constant evolution. Personally, I see this as a weakness. Craig's age has clearly impacted upon the direction of this film - not his fault - but the writers consciously stepping back from him being an old man chasing women and duffing up people, which clearly Connery did, but was not wholly believable.
So we get a subdued, jittery Bond with relatively poor stunts; a baddie who we know nothing about, other than like the vast majority of Bond baddies has a facial disfigurement! Lead lady hardly Ursula Andres, Kim Bassinger or any number of other beautiful women previous.
A Bond fan I am, but not of this film. Well done Daniel you have been amazing, but, this was going out with a whimper, not the bang you deserved.
