I thought I had submitted a review long ago. Don't know what went wrong. Belatedly, I will try again. I re-read to refresh my memory. If you want a book that deals specifically about President Davis and his relationship with the war effort, this is it. Along with trying to deal with the war effort the way he thought best, he had various aspects to deal with and to take into consideration, especially when contemplating a change of command. The commanders with their strengths and weaknesses needed to be considered. The politicians, the public, the soldiers and their feelings about their commander. The Corps and Division generals with their complaints or advocacy of a particular commanding general.
The book moves nicely along with the timeline of the war as it progressed. President Davis had to bear criticism from different angles, many times without the freedom of explaining to the public the rationale of certain decisions due to the necessity of not exposing sensitive information to the enemy. I highly recommend this book. It explains much information about how and why the war developed as it did. I have many books about this war, but this book is special to me. I love this book and am confident that others will also. Very good read.
