I just finished watching episode 2 of the first season, and if this show is indeed cancelled, I think I understand why: the Ethan character is a complete sociopath. He wrecks everything he touches. His marriage is a farce -- he can't seem to tell his wife the truth about anything. In fact, he's one of these people who seems to lie by default even when the truth isn't damaging. Even his profession is pretentious: it's all about maintaining an external image of himself that's better than everyone else. That's probably why he went to Harvard in the first place. He doesn't seem to really care about anybody else. And he's trying to have children? It's probably good that that hasn't happened (yet, anyway). I can't imagine him being a very attentive father, or even much of a role model.
It's a testament to Keegan Michael Key's talent that he's able to make this guy at all likeable. On the page, this man is a dumpster fire. Sam isn't much better, but she seems drawn to him like a moth to a flame, with a similar ending in sight. The other friends don't seem as morally bankrupt; they're mostly collateral damage to Ethan.
I love the talent involved with this show, and I'm considering continuing watching more episodes, but this guy Ethan is exactly the type of person that you identify early on and cut out of your life! Please tell me it's worth it to stay tuned.
Maybe this is the whole point of the show? Friends from college should stay in the past where they can't do any more harm.
