The shows heart is in the right place and the cast is good particularly Sandro Oh as the lead whose character is very sympathetic. Unfortunately too many of the characterizations are caricaturish, meant to embody current zeitgeist types they quickly become 2 dimensional. which makes it hard to tackle the the current political mood with any depth.
The supporting cast are mainly vehicles to make social talking points. The white old guard professors are out of touch with the students not just because their white but also because their old ( which is a bit ageist) so they couldn’t possibly have stayed relevant to the changing times or relate to the kids today in any meaningful way.
The students are portrayed as a bit of a “woke mob” apparently incapable of being able to distinguish actual Nazis from an apparently otherwise well regarded professor who uses the phrase “Heil Hitler” to punctuate a point about the conditions that lead to Naziism. Their main job seems to be to keep the college in a state of fear.
The shows at its best when the storyline is focused on lead characters. It’s fun and often funny to learn about them as they struggle with their own motivations and insecurities. That and and the physical eccentricities ( if not the character development) provided by the veteran actors make it watchable but not particularly memorable
