In my opinion this was a terrible follow up to the first Old Guard where the induction into the world-building stood out, the characters were strong and explicitly present, and the culmination of events left the viewer satisfied and curious about what might happen next.
This film did none of that. Allow me to rant.
The direction:
- Poor fight choreography that felt clumsy and imbalanced.
- Strange lighting choices and errand framing of scenes that kind of confused me in terms of the internal structure of many of the settings.
- Too dependent on CGI and not enough use of practical effects.
The plot:
- Giving Nile a cool weapon wasn't bad but it felt random. Its not like the rest of the team had their own signatures weapons to use and if Nile was going to get one, why wait until AFTER the fight ended for her to pluck a random one off the wall, amongst many, and then keep her stuck to it from then on out?
- Much of the dialogue feels empty. Theres no nuance. And there's little motivation behind many characters actions except for Booker as his actions made sense following the first film. But why wasn't Nile the one to keep in contact with him following his exile instead of creating a random point to divide the husbands only for them to get over it extremely quickly.
- My biggest issue is this "Last Immortal" business. Maybe they plan to answer more questions in the 3rd film but why is Nile the last one after thousands of years of immortals?
- Why does her power as an immortal take away immortality IMMEDIATELY after hurting the others, but Andy's wound healed in the first film.
- We still don't get an answer as to why immortals suddenly lose their powers.
The villian:
- Awful! She was barely in it, she had no presence, and her cover story of immortal interference didn't make sense at any point so it was weird that no one questioned it.
- Tuah never gave a good reason as to why he didn't tell Andy about her. Including him we got three new characters who felt very hollow.
- Why didn't the villain ask for Quynhs immortality after Nile wounded her? She was the only other person on her side! speaking of which, why did Quynh suddenly decide to switch sides at the end? Becoming mortal satisfied her rage somehow? That didn't track for me.
- The helicopter scene! WHAT WAS THE POINT? Baby you got all the immortals already, why are you still floating around?? Why attack Andy with a whole helicopter needlessly when you're mortal your damn self??
Any why were there five helicopters in the end? There are only four immortals left excluding Andy. Speaking of which, why exclude Andy? Why leave an enemy out to come for you whom you could have subdued like the others?
I could go on and on but there was so much missing from this film. I wonder if the source material is more coherent and grounded than this haphazard sequel?
