I'm surprised so many people have it rated so highly. It is a shame this didn't have better writing and editing in parts because the acting and production were really good. The story is told so much from the point of view of Roderick Usher that the character development of other members of the Usher family seems one-dimensional. Then there are the inconsistencies; the first couple of Usher children were warned about consequences as though there was a choice to be made. However, by the final two episodes, it is revealed that the outcome had already been decided decades prior. Roderick and Madeline are intelligent but make dumb deals without asking enough questions and apparently have selective amnesia.
The first episode reveals what will happen, and the next five episodes illustrate how it happened. However, by the time the why is revealed in the last two episodes it seems tacky and superfluous as does the whole last confession gimmick. Even the Auguste Dupin character admits the last confession was unnecessary right at the end.
