I want to start by saying there are things about this movie I did enjoy, Catwoman and Penguin were excellent. Riddler was an interesting take on the character that still retained the most important aspects and I was able to take him a lot more seriously after he took off the gimp mask. However, that can’t fix the fact that I fundamentally disagree with this interpretation of Batman (EMO).
I want to clarify that I am aware that one of the most important and interesting aspects of Bruce Wayne is that he is just as crazy as the villains he fights. What makes him even more interesting to me is his ability to hide this side of himself in public and come off as a rich playboy, the perfect disguise to enable his insane crusades at night. This is something that Robert’s Batman is completely missing and it is not the actors fault, it is the fault of the director and script writer who went so far into trying to make him edgy that they lost sight of what made the character great in the first place. As well as the fact that the way they dress Robert during his Bruce scenes makes him look more like the guy selling speed on the street corner than he does like a playboy. This is a Batman who isn’t even trying to hide the fact that he is Batman.
Some people would argue that this version is so damaged he doesn’t care if people find out who he is, but the whole point of hiding his identity is trying to be a symbol/an idea. To cause fear in the hearts of criminals, which is something this film points out in the opening sequence of the movie. However, if the criminals of Gotham found out that Batman is just a richboy who lost his mommy and daddy nobody would be afraid of him anymore. Any half decent version of Bruce would be smart enough to consider this and create an alter ego to hide the fact he is Batman. This version simply does not do that and I find it completely unacceptable.
