I had no idea this was a series. I thought it was a romance movie about an older couple at the end of their years. I was intrigued from the beginning and settled in. So much drama and dysfunction. Secrets come out, gossip is everywhere and the hesitant, stifled conversation drove me insane. The character I could tolerate was Caroline, but even she sometimes drove me nuts with her spineless whispering and pretending to care when she really wanted off the phone. Her ex husband John is far worse, such a wimpy opportunistic shell of a man going for whomever would pay attention to him. Celia's younger son is a complete jerk and gets dumped at the end from a one night stand- he deserves it! I liked Alan but understood why Celia got irritated with him with his Mary Poppin-ish cheeriness and do gooding. Then there was Gillian, a disturbed tart who murdered her abusive husband. She has a trail of young men that she's had sex with and she can't seem to control herself. So annoying. All in all, there were some good laughs but on the whole, just frustrating characters.
