With the exception of the acting by Johnathan Majors, Paul Rudd, and Michelle Pfeiffer this movie fails at every level. Firstly the good part. Johnathan Majors absolutely kills it as Kang the Conqueror, he manages to come across as both terrifying and sympathetic a combination I was not expecting going into watching it. He steals every scene he is in even with more established characters or veteran actors (Paul Rudd and Michelle Pfeiffer respectively). Paul Rudd is always a pleasure to watch and, to be expected, has the funniest lines in the film. Unfortunately, most if not nearly all of Michelle Pfeiffer's lines are exposition although she turns what would be boring and long-winded monologs into something nearly enjoyable.
Now unfortunately to the bad parts.
The CGI
In a movie where at least 95% of all the scenes had CGI or were entirely CGI the quality is shockingly bad, comparisons between this and the last Antman CGI mean I can only assume that either they higher a different company to do it or gave the current CGI artists a much tighter time frame.
The editing,
Characters just occasionally jumped around without much explanation on how they got to places, for example, and very minor spoilers ahead in one scene Michelle Pfeiffer makes it very explicit that avoiding people is their top priority and implies that it would be very bad if anyone found them. It cuts away to another scene and when it cut back to Michelle Pfeiffer and company they are standing in the open in front of what looks to be a massive caravan of creatures that want to help them. It feels like we missed out on an important scene but instead, it just felt very jarring and confusing.
Kang,
Now even though I praised Johnathan Majors for his portrayal of Kang the writer's portrayal of him leaves a lot to be desired. For those who do not know Kang or Nathanael Richards is the smartest person in any timeline he exists in and as there are infinite variations on him some are good some are bad, but all possess an intellect only rivaled by other versions of himself. But by the third act, he might have become the dumbest villain in marvels history-making extremely stupid mistakes and his technology became entirely ineffective against anything put up against him.
Now I could go on about how Kathryn Newton acting was wooden and her character is preachy and hypocritical. Or how Evangeline Lilly and Michael Douglas are somehow both main characters and have so little agency or screen at that time that they could have been taken out of the movie and it barely would have made a difference. But all you really need to know is that this movie was potentially the worst Marvel has ever produced and I would not recommend spending your hard-earned cash to watch it.
