I think a lot of the 1 star reviews don't realize that the underlying message isn't always just for the children watching the movie. Sometimes, a children's film can have messaged intended for adults. Take Encanto where the message is hey maybe don't push your trauma onto your family members as an adult, and shows kids to not feel like you have to be perfect for your family. The message for adults here in Turning Red is don't be so tough and strict and overbearing on your children that they don't feel like they have to hide things from you. If you're upset by this movie, maybe take a look back on why that upsets you if that is the message.
For children, the message is to learn to love yourself and embrace your quirks. Don't let your parents define who you are as a person.
I think Turning Red is a great movie that pre-teens can really finally relate to. Mei is a confident character who has her quirks, and yes, has funny fantasies about fictional characters. For the people who have problems with how Mei handled that, don't you remember when you were 13? I can almost guarantee you had similar experiences, I know I did. I think the animation is beautiful, the style is wonderful, and the overall story is great. Honestly, one of the few movies that's actually gotten me to laugh in a while, and really connect with Mei.
Really love to see where the director goes from here! Would love to see her work and direct more films for Pixar.
(Also btw, the movie is PG which states some material may not be suitable for children, so if you're uncomfortable with Mei's drawing scene, maybe take a look at the movie rating again when your younger children are watching)
