I had such high hopes for this movie. How can you go wrong with a great cast, timely subject matter, and an excellent idea for a screenplay? Well, they managed to figure out a way to blow it.
Rosamund Pike is the female lead and she does a good job of playing an evil and emotionless guardian who scams old people out of their life savings. She messes with the wrong person, someone who is tied to a ruthless mobster played by Peter Dinkledge.
Dinkledge is a great actor. That is why I was surprised to see him play some of the scenes in such an over the top manner. I think the blame for that rests on the director for allowing those scenes to make it into the final cut. Dinkledge also has a Tribble-sized goatee on his face that is terribly distracting.
What should have been a simple story became convoluted and ridiculous. Screenwriters need to realize that there is nothing wrong with telling a predictable story as long as you do it in an entertaining way. It is a shame that this wonderful cast was wasted on what ended up being a ludicrous premise.
