Azaad(2025)
I noticed a lot reviews on this movie focused on the bond between the horse and the lead character, but for me this film is much deeper that that.
As an Indo-Caribbean individual, this movie resonated with me because it depicted a very real scenario of what may have happened leading up to Indians being sent to work in foreign lands (such as South Africa and the Caribbean) for almost nothing. While I am sure many controversial aspects may have been left out on purpose, I do appreciate a movie being made from this perspective. The young actors did a great job, though more could have been done to develop the character of male lead. Few questions I am left with:
Was it really that easy to win freedom ? Did the zamindars accept the outcome of the horse race as final? The ending feels a bit too good to be true- I know movies don’t necessarily depict facts but given the movie was made to depict a powerful story, I felt that this is something I would have liked to be clear on, given that they were considered the “elites” in those times.
Overall, good story. Deserved much more recognition than given.
