I think the real secret garden in the novel is inside everyone of the characters. The garden was a symbol of the pride and joy that each of us does not realize he owns. Mary, Colin, and Mr. Craven had happiness near them but they did not see it. Everyone of them locked happiness inside their hearts. When they found the key, they became happy again.
