Beyond epic!!!
Sitting down one night catching up and listen to records with one of my best friends that's a fellow movie boffin, it didn't take long to realize that in the background we'd inadvertently happened across something quite far-out as a result of random, subconscious channel-hopping....... a genuine Sci-Fi oddity but a veritable visual feast nonetheless..
This 'anomaly', in that such a striking picture in this specific genre had flown under my radar for so long only served to pique my curiosity furthermore. Subsequently I actively endeavored to finally tag this movie.
It started a few vague searches online equipped with the knowledge that (a young-ish) Bryan Cranston was in it, however I had mistakenly believed the main protagonist to be Kevin Bacon - hence the reason why my original IMDB search drew a blank. Only turns out though that it's actually his lookalike back then, the one-and-only legend Marc Singer of 80's classics such as Beastmaster (a tour de force in the Swords & Sorcery Fantasy with a hint of Soft Porn genres) and the original V series.
If you grew up enjoying 80's Action, Sci-Fi & Horror such as the cult status B movies released by Troma then you'll surely appreciate this gem that was released almost 2 decades before Walter White ever appeared on our screens.
I've absolutely zero-doubt that this movie has been projected onto the walls of countless Techno, Industrial or Punk club nights around the world over the years - It's almost as if that's what it was made for.
Released in 1991 which happens to be the same year as Terminator 2:Judgement Day, but do bear in mind when comparing production values that T2 was done on a budget of $100 million, possibly 20x's the amount that Dead Space director Fred Gallo had to work with at the modest (yet quite prolific) Concorde Pictures. There's a distinct 80's look & feel to Dead Space with its grainy VHS haze & low-budget special effects, yet in my opinion those factors just lend more to it's charm. On top of those big selling points, the running time (including credits) is a lofty 72mins, so even if it's not really up your Straße you won't need to wait long until this celluloid incarnation of LSD's credits roll :-)
Enjoy.
