La haine is one of those movies that I really needed to pay attention to every detail in order to fully understand and live the experience. But... It was hard for me to classify or rate this movie.
The best things here are the dialogue and the photography, which are amazing.
But many times while the movie was playing I felt that many dialogue scenes or even a whole scene doesn't actually bring much to the theme of the movie, so it felt, not specifically unnecessary, but just confusing.
I'm not going to be naive and tell you that if you didn't like it it's because you didn't understand, I can clearly see why the majority of people who aren't used to this type of movie wouldn't like it.
The movie tries to talk about various themes such like police brutality, racism, and yes! We get to see how that works here, but I felt that many of these themes were simply introduced but not quite well explored.
It slightly talks about it between the dialogue scenes and the moments of frustration of the characters.
La haine is a good film, maybe due to its date of release it brings more impact to the film and culture, but even though it's good, it doesn't feel like a movie I'd watch over and over again. It's a solid film with very good performances, but I didn't love it.
The final is very tragic and brings more impact to the story, but I feel like these scenes of chocking tragedy could happen throughout the film and not only in the finale.
It'd bring way more drama and impact to the themes that the movie talks about, but overall, is very good. Yes, It is worth watching.
