The Little Mermaid is the best live action Disney remake to date. Halle was the perfect person to play Ariel. Her voice is beautiful and reminiscent of Jodi Benson but she also makes the songs her own. I don’t think there was anyone that could’ve played Ariel better. Halle was born to be Ariel. I love all the changes they made to this movie. We get more time with Ariel and Eric. Prince Eric was never one of my favorite princes but with Jonah playing him and the depth they gave him, I get the appeal now. Eric’s desire for Ariel was palpable. Jonah and Halle are perfect together and have so much chemistry. Anyone hating this movie because they think it’s being “woke” or something stupid, open your eyes. Or close your eyes and listen, she sounds like our childhood. Watch this movie. Keep an open mind. If color-blind casting helps us see more amazing talent like Halle on the big screen, then it should be employed more. I wish they had held auditions for Belle for the 2017 remake instead of casting Emma Watson who was auto tuned to death. No one complained when Michael Clarke Duncan played a terrifying Kingpin even though Kingpin is a white comic book character. The only bad thing about casting Halle as Ariel is that her beauty was almost distracting. Almost. But that also makes her perfect as a siren, she is so enchanting and pulls you in. She could easily lure me to my death and I’d die happy. My only regret is that I only saw it in theaters once but I bought it on digital on Friday and have already watched it three more times.
