As someone who's favorite game ever is LiS1, this game was very disappointing. In the first game, I chose to save the town and I thought this would matter in DE. It really doesn't matter because I played DE 2 times (keeping Chloe alive and not keeping her alive), just to find out that it truly doesn't matter what you pick because Chloe doesn't correlate to the plot and has no significance whatsoever, she just dotes on Victoria on some Threads like app. I think this is very disrespectful to fans who thoroughly enjoyed Max's and Chloe's relationship/friendship in the LiS1, it makes it seem as if whatever you chose in the first game goes down the drain since DE gameplay is basically the same despite the different LiS1 endings. I know I'd get backlash for saying that they disregarded their relationship by people saying that it's "more realistic" and "highschool relationships don't last", but this is a GAME, NOT reality. If anything, LiS is the last game I'd ever call realistic, the main characters have powers for God's sake!
Moving on, I actually did enjoy the first 3 episodes, I thought Vinh could've been a great character and love interest had they not made him act like a creep and sleep with basically all the characters in game. Aside from that, it was going pretty good and there was a great storyline, but boy was I wrong. The last 2 episodes left me completely confused and lost as to where the story was going. Why is the plot of the story suddenly changing? And why are there so many similarities from the first game?
Of course, this is a sequel and sequels should have similarities, but not to the point that you're literally ripping off the first game! Decknine staff completely ripped off Dontnods work and mastery by recycling their ideas. First off, we have a murder mystery storyline. Then, we basically have the same exact friend trope: Max's friend, Safi, dies before she is brought to life and we find out that Safi has a BFF that died and Max needs to figure out what happened (much like Chloe and Rachel). After that, we get the same exact concurrences such as: the storm, two moons, nightmare sequence, Max's cat texting her (whereas in the first game, Pompidou texts Max), the Abraxas club (Vortex club) & etc. While playing, I made these discoveries and it disappointed me a lot because they just reused pretty much everything and didn't come up with anything new. Had they stayed on the path they started with on episodes 1-3, I wouldn't be writing this review, and I barely even write reviews! This game was very underwhelming and disappointing to me which sucks because I was really looking forward to this game, wanting to give it a chance even though Pricefield fans were going ballistic, and also because Max is like a comfort character to me and I thought it'd be bittersweet seeing her as a grown-up.
If I had to rank all 4 LiS games, this game would be ranked the lowest: LiS1, LiS2, TC, & DE.
The execution was a disaster and this game seemed rushed, like a quick way to bank off of LiS fans by bringing back the beloved Max with the same exact story, but different font!
It's definitely a shame and I definitely don't consider this game canon to Max's story, sorry!
I'm excited to see what Dontnod has in store for us with Lost Records.
