Those who hate it either don't know or want to know black American history. Those who love it can appreciate the satire, irony, humor, historical context, and subliminals floating through this show. It may trigger traumas and emotions, creep you out, or it may even be quite disturbing to many. I wish I can say this wasn't based on true stories 🤷🏾♀️. Here is a list of things you need to understand before understanding "THEM" Season 1:
1) The moving crisis for blacks in Compton (1950s)
2) Western Christianity and its origins & The Protestant Reformation
3) The words to the Pledge of Allgience (USA)
4) The history of Blackface (who started it, why, and how)
5) Colorism
6) Black contributions stolen by white supremecy
7) Segregation & The American education system
8) Jim Crow Era
9) History of "The Black Buck"
10) Black women and child birth
11) History of feminism
12) Bus boycott
13) The desmasculation of the black male
14) Wrongful accusations of black men and boys for kidnapping and murder of white women by white men
15) The passive racism
16) Police corruption
17) I'm sure there is some I'm missing.
18) History of black veterans
Wooo... I'm tired. My mind is blown by this show. They deserve an award for this.
