TL;DR buy this game, it’s $30 right now.
Ok. Let me start off by saying EA deserves pretty much 99.9% of the hate that they get, for reasons that are apparent to anyone that’s been a gamer in the past 15 years or so. With that said, NHL 21 is a masterpiece.
I’ve been playing NHL games on console since NHLPA 93 on the SNES (Jesus I’m old). I’ve also played every EA NHL installment as well as many other franchises. With all that said, I can honestly say this is one of the most addictive hockey games I’ve ever played.
I can’t say anything about the online play, but the Be a Pro mode is amazing. Things feel like they matter this time around, as the Be a Pro mode now feels alive thanks to lots of new commentary, statistics & charts, & cutaway scenes with coaches & GMs. The answers you give in these conversations will cement your standing with both management & teammates as well as fans.
The gameplay is great too. Some will complain that not enough has changed. But I think that the changes that were made were solid changes. As a whole, the gameplay feels way more intuitive this time around. Things are more fluid & realistic. & the computer AI I think is much better than last years edition (your team AI can be pretty moronic at times though.) But overall, the gameplay — while visually similar to NHL 20 — has much improved since last year in its mechanics.
So yeah, from someone that can very much understand the hate EA gets: buy this game & give it a shot. You can even get a free trial by spending a few bucks on EA play. The trial is 10 hours I think. I’m having more fun with this game than I have with any hockey game in a long time.
