This book leaves out important parts of the book, which make the story interesting. In some parts, it fails to convey emotion and makes the characters seem bland. The original book is much better. The illustrations make your eyes hurt and don’t seem like the characters. They skipped over the blue plastic hairbrush, and the ghost king part. My favorite part is the ghost king part, and I feel like it has a lot to do with Nico di Angelo’s character development. They missed Nico telling it to Minos, and I feel that Percy delivering that line takes away from the meaning behind it. Nico cannot show that he believes in himself, and realizes what Minos is making him do in the end, and in doing so, shows that he has morals, as compared to other parts of the book where he does not have a main role that is as prominent. Another thing that I noticed is that Percy’s character is not like him. His character is developed as loyal, as that is his fatal flaw, which leads him to be very trusting of people who is is close too, or has helped him. An example of this flaw not showing is in the end of the book, when even though Daedalus helped them, he still points his sword at him, not trusting him. This is not in the book, and for good reason, as it goes against his morals. I feel like if not for the ghost king part, this would have better suited Nico’s character, which would have fitted the comic book version better. The blue plastic hairbrush proves for the development of Rachel’s character in this book and others, so I am dissatisfied that it was not included. It also shows that Rachel is willing to go any limits to save Percy, which also helps Annabeth’s character because she is jealous of her. Overall, this is a horrible book compared to the original and is not an good adaptation that fails to capture and convey the main elements of the book. I advise new and old readers to read the original book instead.
