Don't get caught up in the comparisons other Reviewers are making. I watched both of Bertino's last 2 movies and this offering is very much a continuation of his previous efforts. This movie is not a Hereditary, it is a much smaller, more compact production done very very well.. Just like "The Monster" was a good concept done well, Bertino has proven he knows how to build and hold suspense. The Dark and The Wicked is good at the simple things, like emitting an overwhelming feeling of ominous dread as the story unfolds.. There are a lot of dull moments for horror fans who are used to a constant stream of jumpscares.. The build-ups seem to be purposely slow and monotone to parallel the characters sense of grief and sorrow.. This will turn off a lot of people, but I didn't mind it too much because the sound design in this movie kept the suspense high and was probably the highlight of the entire production.. The Dark and The Wicked is an above average horror, the scares are few and far between, and a little cliche, but very well executed overall.. Hereditary it is not, and Bertino continues to build himself a burgeoning reputation..!

Tried so hard to make it through 30 grinding minutes... But the storyline and believability just reached it's limit.. Honestly been a very very long time since I stopped watching a movie less than halfway through...

Some good elements (concept and sound fx), but overall plain and ultimately disappointing. Looks like there was a limited budget and the script was a little too ambitious.. If they had trimmed off some excess plot points and focused on the main antagonist abit more it could've turned out better. Also the acting and extras were subpar and at times took me out of the movie..

(( Beware of other Fake 5 Star Reviewers )) 3 Stars as a Comedy.. As a Horror, doesn't scare much. Plot is all over the place (sometimes the movie wants to adhere to exocism lore, and other times it wants to set new rules). Actors are good, but the material they have to work with makes them look unintentionally cheesy at times.. Some good fx and make up work, but overall it's all let down because of bad plot choices and inexplicable character decisions.. After I got over the cheesiness and started laughing it was a better experience..!

Wow, what a disappointing waste of acting talent... Not sure what this film was trying to be: Cheesy kids movie music, unintended laughs, terrible pacing, unrealistic character choices, poor plot, decent cast, lack of realism (after a while the hurricane was just a heavy storm)... what a shame...
