First episode reaction;
It started off accurate to the story in which I became ecstatic and was relieved that I could finally watch an adaptation accurate to the books. The first let down was the fury scene which ended up being super anticlimactic and rushed where the movies actually had a better ms. Dodds scene. And this will go with the rest of what I’m about to say where I understand that it’s hard to fit every detail of the book into the show, however throughout the show they rushed needed scenes, then added drawn out conversation scenes that either didn’t happen or weren’t a big deal. To summarize, pacing was a big issue.
The next issue was the choice for Sally, both with casting along with the choice of script. The Sally in the show is not the sally in the books, and what was presented was an annoying version of the character. From her first scene of her having her “it” girl moment in the rain, any conversation she had with any other character, to her 5 minute conversation with Percy and Grover when they should have been running from the Minotaur, to her playing luchadour with the beast. I was not upset when she died and I wish they would take another creative liberty in the show with the choice of not saving her from the underworld.
Episode two review;
This episode was more accurate to the show, I enjoyed the portrayal of Mr.D and the opening first few scenes. Grover continues to not play into character as strongly as he should, with no issues from the actor but more so from the script. Again they added lengthy cuts with questionable pacing, wasting time that could have gone to scenes such as a more climactic capture the flag scene, which was very slow moving but understandably allowed for some silly Percy shots. The choice for annabeth was questionable, though story accuracy in regards to casting can be argued, the real issue is the line delivery which was dry at best. The choice for Clarisse was excellent, along with Luke.
Overall;
I still enjoyed the show, and again understandably things need to be cut due to time and money. Pacing is definitely an issue. Many of the CGI scenes were excellent, as well as the portrayal of the camp. There were definitely moments where the acting and character portrayals were either excellent or questionable, those excellent being the choice for Chiron, Grover, Mr. D, Percy, Clarisse, Luke, and others. The questionable choices being sally and Annabeth. These are all things the show can iron out in later episodes, and I will continue and am excited to watch the remainder of the series when it is released.
