This is an update to a review I provided months before Season 4 aired. Now that season 4 has concluded, I wanted to give an updated review.
Season 4 does not miss a step on the providing graphic details on the individuals terrible violent crimes. Example: On the Cross Country Killer (CCK) episodes, me and my wife were absolutely sickened by how the CCK basically enjoyed taunting the loved ones by producing a picture of the victim, dressed up but already deceased. The Ken and Barbie Killers up in Canada was especially horrible, and it's clear from evidence from other sources that the woman played her legal hand well against her husband and was able to get out and basically live a normal life. And, the graphic details of the Hillside Stranglers was really intense too. Very scary!
The background music continues to match the tone and content perfectly. I think they may had read and listened to the reviews about past seasons having trouble hearing those interviewed, due to the music being too loud. Because, it was apparently a lot better. I never had a problem with it, but I am understanding how it may had bothered others.
It was nice to see sort of a change from past seasons. Season 4 profiles two mobsters: Sammy the Bull, and John Gotti. I say that's a good change because I don't think many people perceive mobsters as serial killers and not as scary as the traditional assumed killers. But, when thinking deeply, it becomes very clear that mobsters can indeed be perhaps the scariest people one could ever encounter. The John Gotti season finale is a great example.
This season also provided more attention to the chronological and psychological nature of the individuals. In past seasons, most of the focus was on the number of heinous crimes. This was a good change for those who like getting to understand the more psychological nature of the individuals.
Lastly, my past review mentioned a criticism of their part 2 episodes where they often repeated what was mentioned in part 1 for the first few minutes. This seasons for the most part, they avoided this, and I think it was a great on their part.
Just a few criticisms for this season: Sammy the Bull was the third person profiled, and John Gotti was the season finale. During the Sammy the Bull episodes, they mentioned Gotti quite a bit. I started asking myself: "Is this week's episodes on Sammy or John?" On the season finale, some of the information presented came from the Sammy episodes. While making the link was good, I think this should be avoided to not confuse the audience.
The parts of the subtitle were not consistent. Example, some episodes had "Part 1" and "Part 2". Some episodes had "Hour 1" and "Hour 2". I think consistency matters. In my last review, I mentioned why have part 1 and part 2 when the episodes are aired back to back in the United States. For the United States viewing, I would do consistency by having "Hour 1" and "Hour 2". There is no need to use "Parts".
Again, overall a great show to get some quick and well detailed understandings of some of the scariest individuals of both the 20th and so far in the 21st century. I look forward to this show every summer. I hope there is a season 5.
