This is one of the most confusing and idiotic books I have ever read. I was flying through the book, really enjoying the adventure (as I had with I, Pilgrim).
But then it all changed. I literally thought I was hallucinating - did humans really turn into insects? Was there really a time travelling submarine? I had read this in the middle of the night - hence my sense of dislocation. I had to ask my 13 year old son if what I remembered from the middle of the night actually happened. When he confirmed it had, I skimmed the remainder of it - purely because I never want to not finish a book.
To add insult to injury, it’s also very obvious in its prose. There’s no sense of suspense about what will happen with characters you come across. Twins that he meets in the future? Of course they’re his kids. And of course he can neatly set up Laleh (the preposterous rescuee from Iran) with the guy who she’s married to in the future. Ludicrous.
I’ve actively told people not to read it - sorry Mr Hayes. But at least you’ve caused me to write my first ever review online.
