It's been a long time since I read the book but movies are never as good as the books they are based on so I won't consider it.
From a general standpoint, this is NOT a bad movie. It does indeed get quite cringey at times and there are certainly moments that don't work (getting into an ambulence with someone from the other team, etc.)
But overall this is not bad, and a far cry from the "so bad it's good genre".
Grace Vanderwaal has so much talent and her music is so powerful. After what she's been through recently I wish nothing but the best for her and her career. I just hope that this movie has the ability to lift her up rather than tear her down.
