The movie portrays very well the true unspoken emotions and thoughts surrounding mental health issues. The story is very real, no sugar coating. In fact, the movie does a better job than the musical. I am moved to tears every single time I watch this.
SPOILER
It was so on point when Connor’s family was not able to mourn at all after years of disappointment. That does not mean they do not love him at all. This itself is a very complex feeling. Not many other writers or audience understand this.
Many reviewers do not like the show because they do not like Evan himself who is not a purely good person. I agree that what Evan did was definitely not right, but if you were him, would you rather see Connor’s desperate mother cry? Evan himself was depressed and attempted to take his own life. When life suddenly becomes a dream comes true, would you turn away? Again, this is just how real the story is, showing the real human nature.
Many reviewers do not like it that Connor’s real story was all covered by Evan’s lies. Well, the movie does not need to deliberately show Connor’s real personality. His family starts to recollect all good memories of him, thanks to Evan’s lies. When you die, you will only exist as what others remember you to be.
