"'This little horse, overworked, was now lying on the side of the road, and he was no longer of any use to anyone, including himself...' (Between the Wheels, p. 108)
What a powerful story, Hesse! Or were you writing about yourself again?!
In the books of yours I've read, the wounded character's name always begins with H.
I think there's something of yourself in each of them.
As a mother, I was deeply moved by this book.
Yes, I'm not exaggerating; Hans was indeed a brilliant child. When he was successful, he was loved by everyone, and then... Hans's father forced him to give up his favorite pursuits - fishing, running, and playing in the fields - to study and ace his school entrance exams.
Hans never got to experience a normal childhood; he was made to run like a racehorse, his existence forgotten, and his spiritual needs ignored.
If you're a parent, take heed of Hans's story.
He's a boy straight out of The Little Prince...
I'd also say that whoever made the movie 'Every Child is Special' was definitely influenced by some of the most crucial parts of this book...
