An ambitious franchise squandered.
The film was acceptable overall, and Darcy’s performance stood out. Her character deserved a better exit, ideally with hints of danger from her own foresight or her sister’s intervention. The decision for the wife to advise the girlfriend to escape felt more like an attempt at moral integrity than a genuine plot decision, as though the story was reluctant to paint her in a negative light.
The husband, a murderer, somehow experiences no repercussions or supernatural retribution, even with Darcy’s character being hinted at as a witch with dark powers. This is baffling, especially when the mysterious doll—introduced with promise—falls flat. Its odd appearance aside, it has no origin story, no buildup, and adds nothing to the unfolding horror.
The ending lands with one of those “don’t let the audience predict the next move” twists, but it’s so far removed from the expectations built throughout that it feels disjointed and unearned. A complex storyline can have twists and turns without feeling improvised. The director should seriously reconsider his approach.
Ok watch 3/5.
