I really struggled to like this book which overall could have been rather interesting given the time period and characters. The big issue for me was that the author does not know how to use a period! 90% of the book is littered with sentences running on for 2 or more full paragraphs making it actually hard to read and focus on the topic. There are also several vivid homosexual experiences, so be warned if you're homophobic. It's filled with so much backstory of the authors irrelevant memories they get in the way of what's happening. Sorry, I got halfway through and ended up skimming the remaining 300 pages. I returned it to the library wishing I had never checked it out in the first place.
