The 1999 Frank Darabont directed book adaptation of a masterpiece written by Stephen King also ended up being a masterpiece itself. "The Green Mile" is what I consider to be one of the best movies, if not the best of them all. After having watched the movie, I can proudly tell, "They don't make them like this anymore." The heart and effort put into this movie could clearly be seen coming into life on your screens. There is quite of an irony in the fact that Stephen King is a horror genre writer, but two of the best adaptation of his books were the non - horror books that he had written. Namely, "The Shawshank Redemption" and this movie "The Green Mile" itself.
You take the story of a great writer like Stephen King and blend it with the elite direction of Frank Darabont and the master class acting of Tom Hanks and what you get is a three hour masterpiece by the name of "The Green Mile." The plot of the story is about a certain Paul Edgecomb, who is a warden in a prison cell by the name of Cold Mountain Penitentiary. One day, a huge prisoner arrives in the prison by the name of John Coffey. The crimes he is said to have committed are heinous and unforgiveable. However, this convict has some peculiar power. This movie is filled with well written dialogues and every character is really well written. From, Paul Edgecomb to John Coffey to even a freaking mouse is really well written.
The actors in this movie did a really good job. I watched the movie for Tom Hanks as Paul Edgecomb, but was really blown away by the performance of Michael Clark Duncan as John Coffey. There are really a very few times when Tom Hanks gets outperformed by his co-actors this movie might be one of those very few times because Michael Duncan totally killed this John Coffey character. Later on when I went on to read the book, I could totally imagine Michael Duncan whenever John Coffey had a dialogue.
What impressed me about this movie was how this movie portrayed "Death". Other movies portray death to be a sad event which should not happen. However in this movie death is portrayed to be a state of peace for the characters. This, in addition also portrays the cruelty of the world we live in.
The movie is totally worth seeing and i assure you that by the end of the movie it will have you bawling our eyes out.
