The ability Shinkai has to manipulate the audience using dramatic irony right after the comet struck the second time is what separates this film and other romance genre films. We as the audience are given the sensational feeling of relieve, satisfaction and respect at the very end of the movie, when the lovers meet. Shinkai builds up the tension of the lovers not meeting or nearly meeting each other around the end hence tightening up the dramatic irony which Shinkai uses on the audience. At the end, all tension was lost and replaced with satisfaction and relieve, is what sets this romance film apart from other romance based films. I believe the edning scene is what sold the movie billions with the highest grossing jap film.
