I was in 5 bands in my my music “career”: 1961 to 1975-76. I was the drummer in all of them. I didn’t have to worry about being lead singer or frontman. The bands in order of my “career” were (1) nice music, jazz, light rock, and Latin. For the Latin, I played a cheap conga drum; (2) surf music band, adding British rock in ‘64 with the Beatles and the rest of the British Invasion; (3) blues-hard rock band into late1966; (4) rock/jazz band in 1968 and ‘69. (5) my brother’s band that played rock, disco, and some jazz ( I played the congas and some other percussion instruments) NOTE: I was in the US Navy from May 1965 to August 1968. Luckily, I was land-based in the Continental US and was lucky enough not to be sent to Vietnam, where I lost some good friends. Being stateside, I was able to play in band #3 thru 1966 while in the SF Bay Area. I got transferred to the east coast in February 1967 and was released to inactive duty in August 1968. During those two years, I only practiced my drums, stuffed with pillows and taped cymbals (for silence) in a rented garage. I MISSED THE BAND! I MISSED THE MUSIC! I could only LISTEN to others. In late ‘68, I was taking piano lessons in San Francisco, and there, I hooked up with the rock-jazz band whose music was original. Somewhere between 1970 and ‘76, I played congas in my brother’s band that chose to play rock and jazz and could segway into disco at the drop of a hat. Nobody in those days wanted to pay us much, so one night we played for the door to maybe get more money and each got $12.00. I gave my money to the other guys because I had a real job.
So, I can say that “Daisy Jones and the Six” brought back memories to me because of the music of my era (Dusty Springfield, are you kidding?…wow!), the egos, attitudes, pain, sorrow and emptiness, and the work and effort it takes to be a performing musician.
We weren’t looking for a recording contract - just fun and a couple of bucks. In the end, like Billy, I had to make a choice between music and family. That life takes you away from friends and family if you are serious about performing. I chose family. But, It was a fun ride. So Daisy Jones…hit a home run with me. I even liked the peek at the Empire State Building when Simone’s bus arrived in New York. I lived in Flushing, New York for a year and a half. So, the bus arrival brought back memories for me.
This was a long explanation of my music performance history; but, except for the recording contract, this was my story. I put a lot of work and emotion into my music; and I had to put up with a lot of egos along the way. This movie was perfect. The cast actually performing the songs was a great relief and escape from lip-sync. You have to have the experiences that I had to appreciate it at my level which is ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️.
