If you want to understand the impact of racism on African American aspirations, see this movie. As despised as he was by white America, this father would accept no less for his children than the perfection the larger society demands of them. His audacity and his bodacious persistence in shaping the lives of his children, rather than deferring to the common wisdom, is to be commended. His ability to command resources in the face of insurmountable odds is a lesson for anyone who accepts an initial "no" for an answer. The world has no respect for African American fathers--not just Richard Williams. However, he has shown the world the power of deflecting a lifetime of racism into teachable moments that propelled all of his children, not just Venus and Serena, to greatness. Hopefully this movie will give Mr. Williams his flowers while he can still smell them. All hail, King Richard!
