Freier Fall (Free Fall) is an absolutely incredible film, with excellent directing, acting, sets, soundtrack and more, and all produced on a budget. The characters of Marc Borgmann and Kay Engle, played by actors Hanno Koffler and Max Riemelt, are totally believable and relatable. The chemistry and sense of love between them, whether overtly or subtlety conveyed - comes across as being so genuine and intense that you might almost think that you were watching a documentary film about a real couple instead of a work of fiction. Much is said in dialogue but a hell of a lot is said just through facial expressions, talk about good acting!
You walk away from the film feeling like you KNOW these two men, something I wish I could say was true! A few critics have said that Freier Fall was "copied" from Brokeback Mountain, which is wrong on so many levels, because the story that both films present is one that countless gay men have experienced in real life. No one has a copyright on this human experience or the telling of it.
I personally find Freier Fall to be the better of the two films. Two hot looking, really likable, masculine guys who happen to be cops - (and who look really good together ;) - fall in love and experience joy, but also the pain of loss. The film speaks to me on many levels and I've watched it countless times. I came out around the age of 32 and like Marc and Kay, have had experience in law enforcement, so the film really resonated with me in those regards.
I've read that a sequel is in the works. Covid has apparently slowed things down (or so I read), but I hope it becomes a reality. Marc and Kay deserve to find each other again. Their story, left "as is" - is painful and incomplete. Their finding each other again and the resulting "resolution" is something that will be worth seeing and remembering.
