Strong story, fascinating characters, and it really does have an epic sweep to it. There's romance, there's personal rivalry and also class hatred when matters of real consequence are at stake. It sees the good in people, too, so not one for the nihilists and cynics as it illustrates just how complex real life can be. A very good film.

The director David Fincher's late father, Jack, wrote the screenplay years ago and what a piece of work he left behind for his son to work on. For people whose knowledge is of 'Citizen Kane' and its making, or of Orson Welles involvement in that, or of the old Hollywood studio system, there is much to savour in this film. There's some fine acting also in this good-looking film. One of the highlights turned out by an embattled industry in such troubled times.
