So boring and not original. Lack of world building and character development. Dialog between characters was dull and the conflicts/obstacles between them didn't add much to the story, and were honestly kind of predictable. There's no connection to any of the characters really, as individuals or as a group.
The acting wasn't amazing overall but I did like how the synthetic human character Andy was portrayed the best. Some reviewers were put off by how young the actors/characters were but I think if the script were better it probably could've worked. Like i said there wasn't much character development that told us why these young people ended up in this situation and how they crossed paths with eachother.
One thing I appreciate about Alien (and all movies in general) is pacing. Both films were 2 hours long but with Alien it felt like the story built up gradually with good ebbs and flows whereas Romulus kind of jumped into the action right away and stayed there. It seemed to rely on action and jumpscares more than story, but even some of the action scenes weren't that thrilling. And there were too many scenes that didn't make sense and where the characters made dumb decisions that made me roll my eyes. For instance the xenomorph's bodily fluids are supposed to be so acidic that it burns through flesh and metal, but apparently it's totally fine to stand there with your foot on top of it in victory after you just shot it to death.
And then there was the big reveal of the new species which I guess was supposed to add shock and more terror but even that fell flat for me. At best it was just gross and weird and I found myself laughing.
As a fan of the franchise I was really looking forward to Romulus but it just didn't do it for me. There was no emotional investment for me at all. Apart from a couple tense moments and aforementioned jumpscares, it wasn't funny, sad, scary, gripping, fun. It was just...meh.
